Acting quickly can play a vital role in reducing damage caused by flooding, water and mud.
If dealt with quickly in most cases the recovery process can be shortened and many items saved , particularly if a drying process can begin within the first 24-48 hours of the incident occurring.
At Seco Solutions we have vast first hand experience of helping and mitigating after flood damage in a variety of situations, but in all cases the following steps would be recommended.
Precautionary Measures.
- Have temporary lighting available ie. torches, battery lights and candles.
- If a danger occurs disconnect the main electric to the affected area.
- Make sure any personal valuables and documents are in a secure area.
- Get your pets to safety.
- If possible move carpets and keep at a higher level.
- Raise any pieces of furniture and items of value to protect against humidity.
- Have your insurance company, policy number and policy details to hand.
Reactive Measures
- Avoid wading through any flood water if the electricity is still on or if there is a possibility the water is contaminated.
- If possible open the windows and doors to ventilate the affected area as much as you can.
- Remove wet textiles and carpets - this will help reduce the drying time for the affected area.
- Where possible place wood blocks, saucers or aluminium foil between the furniture and any floor coverings that cannot be removed to avoid the items absorbing the water.
- If a freezer has been contaminated with flood water or had to be turned off, it should be emptied, all items discarded and cleaned as soon as possible.
- Secure any damaged paperwork, documents, books, photo's, etc remove excess water and place in a cold storage if possible. (ie fridge or freezer if available). Leave in this state as there are companies that can help restore them from a cool or frozen state using a specialised process.
- Contact your insurance company or specialist restoration company if you are not insured.
